The Parent-Child Mother Goose Program

Who this program is for

A group experience for parents and their babies and young children up to the age of 3 1/2 years, focusing on the pleasures and power of rhymes, songs and stories together.

The program is for any parent / care giver who wishes to strenghten their communication and attachment with their child.

Program Objective

PARENTS

  • Gain confidence as learners and parents.

  • See that they can positively affect how their children behave and learn.

  • Develop more realistic expectations of their children.

  • Learn new ways of dealing with cranky, fussy times.

CHILDREN

  • Show a marked improvement in language and pre-literacy skills.

  • Gain self-esteem.

  • Develop social skills.


PARENTS AND CHILDREN

  • Experience the spark of delight and magic that comes from enjoying a favourite rhyme or song together.

  • Take away a repetoire of rhymes, songs and stories.

  • Enjoy strengthened bonding.

  • Develop a network of friends.

Program Description

Each group of parents / care givers and children (birth - 2 years or 2 years - 3 1/2 years) meets with two teachers once a week, for 10 weeks at a time.

Sessions are relaxed with parent, child and teacher sitting on the floor, learning songs, rhymes and stories. Teaching is directed at the parents with children joining in. Each group is about one hour, including snack and discussions.

A snack is provided, and the program is FREE for participants.

Transportation assistance is available.

Program Location

Groups are offered in Newton, Guildford, Whalley, Clover Valley and in various languages (i.e. Korean).

Program Funding

The Parent-Child Mother Goose program in Surrey receives funding from:

  • The United Way's 'Success by 6' Initiative

  • Make Children First Initiative - Ministry of Children and Family Development.

Referrals or Prerequisites

The Parent-Child Mother Goose Program is offered in Newton, Guildford, Whalley and Cloverdale. There is a registration process for the program.
